John Howes, 66 ACRES OR THEREABOUTS,
inkjet print on canvas - 50 X 50 cms
|
|
Howes' work is derived from the environment of the farm where he lives in South Wales. The 70-acre farm is typical of the marginal farming that comprises much of the agricultural landscape of Wales. It is stocked with sheep with most of the land being put down to grass for forage and conservation.

While the physical appearance of the land might seem ageless it is, however, constantly affected by seasonal changes and the practice of farming, and in process, thereby, subjected to significant modification over a period of time.

John Howes, GLEANINGS
stone and wood - 1m high
|
Howes works with materials, both man-made and natural, from the farm and the farming practice; stone, earth and grass are combined with plastic, string and implements to suggest layers of narrative about this particular environment.

There is a strong sense of documentation about much of his work with text often being used to uncover possible meanings in the pieces. Materials and objects are used fairly directly and are formally organised into powerful compositions that make reference to archaeology, ecology, natural history, botany, conservation, social history etc.
